Orange trees by day, grapevines by night

Orange trees by day,

Grapevines by night:

That’s what I’d say

We’ve made of the bright

And the dark, we together,

On our journey through weather

Of passing sorrow

And passing delight.

And so should tomorrow

Fall barren with blight,

Our trust will have its secret store

From all we grew in love before,

And so when branch by way of root

Can bloom and come to leaf again

And offer us sustaining fruit,

How great our store will be by then—

Our store of love, and so we’ll share

The bounty that we'll come to there,

As we make our human way

Through vineyard dark and orchard bright:

Orange trees by day,

Grapevines by night.
